Life in the Pittsburgh Strip District

The Strip is a one half square mile area northeast of Downtown Pittsburgh. This multi-ethnic neighborhood is total Pittsburgh. What began as a rail hub for produce and fish has become Pittsburgh’s favorite destination for fresh food, all on a few streets lined with wholesale stores, sidewalk vendors, restaurants and coffee shops. This place hustles and bustles all day long, but even more so on the weekends. At night it comes alive with nightlife as varied as its shops and markets. The Strip combines an industrial past with a hip vibe and has become one of the most popular neighborhoods for urban living. In recent years, old warehouses have been converted into luxury condominiums and townhouses. Young professionals and downsizing empty-nesters are flocking here to live for all the conveniences right outside their door and the proximity to Downtown.

Key Features

  • Heinz History Center

The Strip is proud to be the home of the Senator John Heinz History Center. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, it’s Pennsylvania’s largest history museum devoted to the history and heritage of Western Pennsylvania. Explore Pittsburgh’s rich tradition and innovation and the most compelling stories from American history with a western Pennsylvania connection.

  • Pittsburgh Opera

The Pittsburgh Opera headquarters is located in The Strip in the former George Westinghouse Air Brake Factory and is the oldest “green” building in Pittsburgh. This is the Opera’s working space and has become one of the most popular places in the city to hold an event, especially weddings. It’s rustic, lofty and raw. If you want to book it you’ll most likely have to get on the waiting list.

  • Primanti Brothers Sandwich

    Primanti Brothers

Primanti Brothers has been a Pittsburgh and Strip tradition since the 1930s. It started as a food cart, later became a sandwich shop, and is now a restaurant. Famous for its signature sandwich of grilled meat, Italian dressing, coleslaw, tomato, and french fries between two slices of Italian bread, Primanti’s is especially popular with the late night crowd leaving the bars.

  • Pennsylvania Macaroni Company

    PA Macaroni Company

The Pennsylvania Macaroni Company is the gem of The Strip and a mecca of Italian grocery goods. This is about as real and authentic as it gets. Come here for the best cured meats, cheeses, sauces, pasta, olive oils, breads and more.  Penn Mac has the best wholesale prices on cheese that you’ll find anywhere in the city.  This place is always packed. Get your fresh baked breads early as they sell out fast.

  • Gaucho Parrilla Argentina

As you near 16th & Penn Ave. it’s hard to ignore the smell or miss the line for Gaucho Parrilla Argentina. This Latin American eatery has an overwhelming menu featuring wood-fired steaks, chorizo sandwiches, empanadas, salads and sampler platters. Gaucho has received rave reviews from food critics around the country and landed #7 on Yelp’s 2015 100 Best Places to Eat in the U.S.  The food is as good as what you’d eat in a fine dining restaurant but at a fraction of the price. One visit will make you a Gaucho fanatic.
